DEACONS CORNER - June 2025
“Flowers appear on the earth;
the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land.” Song
of Solomon 2:12
In spite of Mother Nature's best
efforts to fool us, we really have transitioned from Winter to Spring and,
finally, into Summer! Since each season seems to have its identifying
“signature day” it is fitting that, as a society, we celebrate parents with the
coming of the warmer and more fruitful times of the year.
In May, as Spring awakens the
earth with the blossoming of flowers and crops and the renewal of life to both
our landscapes and the animals that inhabit them, we acknowledge and celebrate
our mothers...the greatest creators and nurturers of life within our culture.
And this month, amid the warmth and strength of the summer sun, we will
celebrate the protectors and providers of that culture by honoring our fathers
on June 15th.
We Deacons have chosen to capitalize
on Fathers' Day by marking it Hawaiian Shirt Day...a fun way to recognize the
fathers in our midst AND to raise funds to put a Bible into the hands of
children during this year's Vacation Bible School. Some of the Church's Bible
studies are also donating or raising money towards that same goal. This project
came about because a child at last year's VBS asked to take a Bible home. They
didn't have one at home and they wanted to learn more and share what they had
learned with their parents, siblings and friends!
If you'd like to be part of this here's
how it will work: since Fathers' Day falls on the same day as Choir recognition
day (you may know that better as “strawberry shortcake day”) we invite everyone
who can to wear a Hawaiian shirt to the shortcake social and offer a donation
towards VBS. It'll be fun and productive! A shirt could also be a great Father’s
Day gift ladies (his and hers?)...just saying.
As an example of how productive
our congregation can be, 27 walkers (17 adults and 10 children) along with 23
non-walking donations, raised $2,332 in last month's annual Crop Walk. Of that
total, $583 will go to our Food Pantry at the yellow house. The generosity of
the members of our church family, both in donations and volunteering of time is
inspiring and appreciated!
“Do
not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are
pleasing to God.” Hebrews 13:16
While we're on the subject of
VBS, we are planning on entering a float into the Argyle 4th of July
parade. If this is something you might want to be involved with, please contact
Corinne Fitzgerald for more information.
And finally, I would like to
wish all of the fathers in our midst a very happy and well deserved shout out
for Fathers' Day! Being a father is a demanding role, being a Christian father
is harder yet, as we strive to teach our children in the ways of the Lord by
setting examples of living a Christlike life. We don't always succeed in every
endeavor to emulate Christ but the fact that our children see us trying is
enough for them to try too!
“I
believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd
moments, when they aren’t trying to teach us. We are formed by little scraps of
wisdom.” Umberto Eco, Italian medieval historian
Tom Genovese for
the Deacons
