DEACONS' CORNER - APRIL 2024
Famed Italian film director Federico Fellini once said, “Life is a combination of magic and pasta”. As a fellow Italian I can identify a bit with that sentiment, but suddenly it seems that in the world we live in today, the magic is waning and the pasta, among other staples, can often be in short supply.
According to the most current report from the Census Bureau's Household Pulse Survey, data collected from October 18-30 of 2023 revealed that 12.5% of the country's adult population (28 million people) live in homes where there was sometimes or often not enough to eat in the last week. Included in that overall figure were 3.0% who “often” did not have enough to eat in the last week and 9.5% who “sometimes” did not have enough food that month! If these sobering figures make you wish there was something you could do to help, the Deacons' April agenda offers multiple opportunities.
At the top of the list is the annual CROP Hunger Walk slated for April 28 following Sunday school. There will be a registration table in Fellowship Hall on the 7th, the 14th and the 21st where you can sign up and get sponsorship forms. The CROP Hunger Walk is a nationwide, community-based walk fundraising event held in cities and towns across the United States to support the Church World Service in their global mission to respond to hunger. Each participant solicits individuals to sponsor them to walk with 25% of the money raised being returned to APC as the local event host for our use in fighting hunger. Its a nice family event that rewards each participant with the feel good buzz that comes from helping others.
On another food related front, if you are one of our many congregants who volunteer at the Open Door Soup Kitchen in Glens Falls there has been a change to the open dates available to volunteers in that Tuesday lunch spots are no longer available. Kelsey Tuttle is making a new schedule for June through December which she anticipates having available in early May. She will be looking for volunteers to fill Thursday dinner (4–6pm) and Wednesday or Friday lunches.
If you're not the volunteering type but still would like to help, consider donating food items, or possibly time if you have it, to our own Food Pantry in the yellow house. If you'd like information contact Linda Burch via email: linnie6burch@me.com or call Tonya in the church office.
In the midst of all of the above, the Deacons have been hard at work. Flower arrangements were delivered to all of our senior brethren in assisted living, cards have been mailed to our college students and military members and the Christmas change jars will be decorated and available April 2nd . And always, know that if you are aware of a Brother or Sister who has a need please inform one of the Deacons or Bryan so that we can minister to them.
“Jesus said 'I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst'.”
Respectfully and in Christ's name, Tom Genovese
